Law is a field that changes quickly. For lawyers, keeping up with these changes is essential for success and sustainability. The term “law new” refers to developments in the law that impact the legal profession, whether it is a legislative proposal, a case decision, or an administrative regulation.

New York City Protections for Height and Weight
Governor Hochul signed a bill that expands the prohibition against discrimination on the basis of an individual’s height or weight. The new law prohibits employers, housing providers and operators of public accommodations from engaging in discriminatory practices based on an individual’s height or weight, except when the employer can demonstrate that the requirement is necessary to ensure the normal operation of the business.
Disclosure Requirements for Data Breaches
The law will require City agencies to disclose breaches involving private identifying information if the information could be used by unauthorized persons. This law amends the City’s data breach notification laws to align them with State requirements. It also expands the requirement for affected residents to receive notice of a data breach.
Statute of Limitations Expansion
The legislature passed and the Governor signed a bill that extends the statute of limitations to three years for all claims of unlawful discriminatory practice filed with the New York State Division of Human Rights. The new law will take effect on February 15, 2024.
Licensing for Third-Party Food Delivery Services
This bill requires all third-party food delivery services to register with the Department of Consumer Affairs and to pay a licensing fee. It would also repeal the subchapter in the Administrative Code containing existing laws regulating third-party food delivery services.
New Rules Related to a Construction Labor Provider’s License
The legislature passed and the Mayor signed a bill that will require all construction labor providers to obtain a license in order to operate. The new law will also require construction labor providers to provide certain notices and maintain records, among other things.
New Rules Related to a Real Estate Broker’s License
The legislation will change the definition of a real estate broker in the State of New York and require all brokers to obtain an individual license to engage in the brokerage business. The legislature also requires that the registration application include certain information, and establishes penalties for failure to register or renewal.
