Founded in 1919, the New York Daily News was the first successful tabloid newspaper in the United States. Originally named the Illustrated Daily News, it attracted readers with sensational coverage of crime and scandal, lurid photographs and other entertainment features.

At its peak circulation in the mid-20th century, the Daily News was one of the highest-circulation newspapers in the country. It was purchased in 2017 by Tronc, a Chicago-based media company.

Today the Daily News serves a broad urban audience with breaking news, intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip and politics, a large sports section and a wide range of opinion sections. The paper is available at more than 1,300 locations in and around the metropolitan area of New York, including its home base, the city of Manhattan.

In addition to its print editions, the Daily News is available online and in a mobile app. The Daily News website is a comprehensive source for national and international news, as well as local information about the Yankees, Mets, Giants and Jets. The app gives users access to the same stories as the printed version of the newspaper, plus exclusives and a full-featured sports section.

The Yale Daily News is the nation’s oldest college daily newspaper, published Monday through Friday during the academic year. It is financially and editorially independent of the university. Its staff is made up entirely of student journalists, who collaborate closely with editors from the paper’s various cultural centers and affiliated groups. The News has won several awards for its work. It also publishes a special Commencement issue and a series of annual special issues commemorating the city of Yale, its alumni and communities of color.
