The Yale Daily News Historical Archive

Daily news is a type of publication that is printed and distributed every day and contains news and information about current events. Examples of daily newspapers include The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Daily news often focuses on politics, business, sports, and entertainment.

The Yale Daily News Historical Archive was made possible by a generous donation from an anonymous Yale College alumnus. The gift enables us to complete the migration of the archive to a new, more user-friendly platform and will help support its ongoing maintenance and preservation.

Published each weekday while Yale is in session, the Daily News is the oldest college daily newspaper in the United States. The paper has been a source of news and debate at Yale since 1855, and its staff members have gone on to make significant contributions in journalism and public life. Past editors and writers have included William F. Buckley, Lan Samantha Chang, John Hersey, Joseph Lieberman, Strobe Talbott, and Calvin Trillin.

Founded in 1919 as the first tabloid newspaper in the United States, the New York Daily News found abundant subject matter in the sensational crime and scandal that dominated city life of the time. The paper attracted readers with its lurid coverage and prominent photographs, as well as its celebrity gossip, comics, a sports section, and other entertainment features. It was the first major American newspaper to employ a photographic department, and it was an early adopter of the Associated Press wirephoto service. In its heyday, the Daily News had the highest circulation of any American newspaper.

Today, the New York Daily News is owned by Tronc, the former Tribune Company, and is headquartered at 4 New York Plaza in Lower Manhattan. It remains one of the largest-circulation metropolitan daily newspapers in the country.

The Daily News is committed to informing, inspiring and engaging the people of New York. It is also dedicated to advancing the arts, preserving the environment, and encouraging civic engagement. The newspaper has been at the forefront of democratizing the media and establishing a model for community engagement. In addition, the Daily News has led the way in pioneering new digital and mobile technology. The newspaper continues to be an industry leader in breaking local and national news. The Daily News was named the best news site in America by the American Society of Newspaper Editors in 2022. It is the third consecutive year that the News has been awarded this honor. The site has also been recognized for innovation and leadership by the Associated Press. The newspaper was the first to launch a mobile news application in 2005, and it has developed a range of innovative smartphone and tablet applications.
